Entitled “Nuestra Tierra, Nuestro Pueblo” (Our Land, Our People), the mural spans an impressive 16 feet tall and 100 feet wide, wrapping around the Palace of the Governors. It depicts a vibrant tapestry of images that celebrate the cultural heritage, diversity, and spirit of the city. With bold brushstrokes and vibrant colors, the mural showcases scenes of Indigenous Pueblo ceremonies, Spanish colonial architecture, and contemporary urban life. It features portraits of influential figures such as Po’pay, the Tewa leader who welcomed Spanish settlers to the region, and Maria Martinez, the renowned potter known for her black-on-black ceramics. “Our goal with this mural was to capture the essence of Santa Fe,” said artist Maru García. “We wanted to create a visual narrative that reflects the rich history, diverse cultures, and vibrant spirit of our city.” The mural, which took over two years to complete, was created by a team of six artists: García, Manuel Escamilla, Sheri Jones, Sarah Jimenez, April Bejarano, and Adrian Zubia. They worked closely with local historians and community members to ensure that the mural accurately represents the city’s unique character. “It’s been a labor of love,” said Escamilla. “We’re honored to have played a part in creating such a lasting artistic legacy for our community.” The unveiling of the mural was a major cultural event in Santa Fe, attended by city officials, community leaders, and art enthusiasts.
