The promenade will span approximately 1.5 miles along the Mississippi River, featuring a wide walkway lined with lush greenery, interactive fountains, public art installations, and a plethora of new restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues. It is designed to celebrate the city’s rich maritime heritage while offering a modern and inviting space for relaxation, recreation, and cultural immersion. At the heart of the promenade will be ‘The Wharf District,’ a 20-acre waterfront park with a central plaza, a grassy amphitheater for concerts and events, and a splash pad for children. The park will provide a tranquil oasis amidst the bustling city center, offering stunning views of the river and the historic ships docked nearby. The project also includes the redevelopment of the Spanish Plaza at the base of Canal Street, which will become a vibrant gateway to the French Quarter. The redesigned plaza will feature a new fountain, seating areas, and a dedicated space for local vendors and musicians. “The Wharf is more than just a waterfront attraction,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “It is a symbol of our city’s resilience, creativity, and commitment to creating a more vibrant and equitable future for all New Orleanians.” The project is estimated to cost approximately $250 million and is expected to create over 1,000 construction jobs and 3,000 permanent jobs upon its completion. Construction is slated to begin in 2024, with an estimated completion date of 2028. “The Wharf is a transformative project that will not only enhance our waterfront but also connect our neighborhoods, create economic opportunities, and improve the quality of life for all New Orleanians,” said Jeff Schwartz, CEO of the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority.
