This method maximizes plant growth and yields, while conserving water and resources. The garden is expected to produce a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs, all grown in a controlled environment. “This garden is a game-changer for Detroit,” said Erica Ward Gaddis, founder and executive director of Fresh Corner Community Farm, the organization behind the project. “It will provide fresh, healthy food to our community, create jobs, and improve our quality of life.” The project is a collaboration between Fresh Corner Community Farm, the City of Detroit, and DTE Energy. It aims to address food insecurity in the area while fostering urban renewal and economic development. Vertical Roots will not only supply fresh produce to the surrounding neighborhood but also create educational opportunities. The garden will serve as a hub for workshops, tours, and youth programs, inspiring Detroiters about sustainable farming and urban agriculture. “This is a beacon of hope for Detroit,” said Congressman Rashida Tlaib. “It shows that our city is committed to innovation, sustainability, and improving the lives of our residents.” The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by local officials, community members, and supporters from across the city.
