According to the National Park Service, the vandalism occurred overnight on May 11, 2023, leaving behind a slew of graffiti markings on the monument’s sandstone walls. The graffiti, which includes vulgar language and symbols, has marred the delicate petroglyphs, some of which are thousands of years old. Petroglyphs are ancient carvings created by Native American tribes, depicting their history, culture, and spiritual beliefs. The Petroglyph National Monument, located on Albuquerque’s West Mesa, preserves over 24,000 petroglyphs. Park rangers and volunteers are currently assessing the damage and working to remove the graffiti. However, some of the markings may be permanent, leaving a lasting scar on the monument’s cultural heritage. “This is a heartbreaking loss for our community and for the history of our region,” said Mark Preisser, superintendent of Petroglyph National Monument. “These petroglyphs are irreplaceable and hold immense cultural and spiritual significance.” The vandalism has sparked outrage and concern among Albuquerque residents and conservation groups. The city’s mayor, Tim Keller, has condemned the act as “an ignorant and malicious attack on our shared history.” The National Park Service is investigating the incident and urging anyone with information to come forward. The agency is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators. “We are committed to protecting Petroglyph National Monument and preserving its cultural heritage for future generations,” said Preisser. “We will work tirelessly to hold those responsible accountable and restore the monument’s integrity.” Albuquerque police are also assisting in the investigation and are encouraging residents to report any suspicious activity in the area.
