The multi-phased project, dubbed “Baton Rouge Riverfront,” aims to enhance the city’s iconic Mississippi River waterfront by creating new green spaces, recreational facilities, and entertainment venues. Key highlights of the plan include: * Riverwalk Promenade: A scenic pedestrian walkway along the riverfront, connecting downtown to Spanish Town. * River Stage and Amphitheater: An outdoor venue for concerts, performances, and community events. * Interactive Fountain: A playful water feature that will create a gathering space for families. * Interpretive Center: A facility dedicated to showcasing the history and culture of Baton Rouge. * Adaptive Reuse of Historic Buildings: The restoration and repurposing of existing buildings along the riverfront. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform our beloved riverfront into a vibrant and accessible destination,” said Mayor Broome. “We envision a space where residents can connect with their city, visitors can experience our unique culture, and our economy can thrive.” The project will be funded by a combination of public and private investments. The city has already secured $10 million in federal funding and is seeking additional partnerships to cover the estimated $200 million cost. Construction is expected to begin in early 2024, with the first phase slated for completion by 2026. The project is expected to create hundreds of jobs and boost tourism in the city. “This revitalization will not only beautify our riverfront but also create a sense of pride and placemaking,” said City Council President Darryl Hurst. “We are excited to work with the mayor and our community partners to bring this vision to life.” The Baton Rouge Riverfront project has drawn widespread support from residents, businesses, and community organizations. “We look forward to seeing our riverfront become a vibrant hub for our city,” said Susan Rolfs, executive director of the Downtown Development District. “This investment will create a lasting legacy for generations to come.”
