The project, announced by Mayor Lori Lightfoot, will extend the Riverwalk by a total of 1.5 miles, connecting it to the South Branch Bridge and the Ping Tom Memorial Park. This significant expansion will create a continuous riverfront promenade stretching for over five miles along both the main and south branches of the Chicago River. The new sections of the Riverwalk will boast a variety of amenities, including: * A 300-foot floating walkway connecting the west and east banks of the river near the South Branch Bridge * A kayak launch and docking area at the Pilsen Riverwalk * A promenade adorned with art installations and interactive displays * Green spaces, seating areas, and shade structures * Commercial and retail spaces to foster a vibrant riverside atmosphere The expansion aims to improve accessibility and connectivity within Chicago’s downtown area. It will also provide opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and community engagement. Visitors will be able to enjoy scenic walks, paddle along the river, or simply relax and take in the city’s stunning skyline. The project is expected to cost approximately $40 million and is part of Mayor Lightfoot’s broader plan to invest in Chicago’s infrastructure and public spaces. Construction is slated to begin in 2024 and is estimated to be completed by 2026. Once completed, the expanded Chicago Riverwalk will serve as a symbol of the city’s commitment to waterfront development and will further establish Chicago as a world-class destination. It is anticipated to attract even more visitors and boost economic activity along the riverfront.
