The colony will consist of approximately 500 penguins of three different species: African penguins, king penguins, and gentoo penguins. These elegant birds will inhabit a newly expanded and immersive habitat known as “Penguin Encounter.” The $100 million expansion features a state-of-the-art, 600,000-gallon penguin pool, complete with underwater viewing areas and an artificial “beach” where the penguins can socialize and interact with visitors. Guests will have the opportunity to observe these fascinating animals up close, witness their playful antics, and learn about their unique adaptations. “We are thrilled to bring this historic addition to SeaWorld,” said Jim Maddy, SeaWorld San Diego’s Park President. “The penguin colony will not only provide an unforgettable experience for our guests but also contribute to the conservation and understanding of these extraordinary creatures.” Penguin Encounter will feature cutting-edge technology that allows visitors to interact with the penguins in innovative ways. Interactive educational exhibits will provide insights into penguin biology, behavior, and conservation efforts. The African penguins, the largest species in the colony, are known for their distinctive black and white markings. King penguins, the second-largest species, stand out with their vibrant orange chest bands. Gentoo penguins, the fastest swimmers among the three, are easily recognized by their sleek black heads and white faces. Conservation is a key aspect of SeaWorld’s penguin colony. The park has a long-standing commitment to protecting penguins in the wild and has been involved in various conservation initiatives. “By bringing penguins to SeaWorld San Diego, we hope to inspire our guests to care about these amazing animals and support efforts to safeguard their future,” said Maddy. The penguin colony is expected to open to the public in spring 2023. SeaWorld San Diego is located in Mission Bay and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Southern California.
