The development, known as “The Forge,” will be located on the former site of the Springfield Armory National Historic Site. The development, which is being led by the nonprofit organization Community Development Corporation of South Berkshire (CDC), will include a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, with rents ranging from $500 to $1,100 per month. The apartments will be available to individuals and families earning up to 80% of the area’s median income. “This is a significant step forward for affordable housing in Springfield,” said Mayor Domenic J. Sarno. “This development will provide much-needed housing for our residents and help to revitalize a historic part of our city.” The Forge will also include amenities such as a community room, a fitness center, and a playground. The development is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. The City Council’s approval of the development follows a lengthy review process that included several public hearings. Councilors praised CDC for its commitment to community engagement and for its track record of developing high-quality affordable housing. “CDC has a proven track record of success, and we are confident that they will deliver a first-class development for Springfield,” said Ward 6 Councilor Justin Hurst. The Forge is part of a larger effort by the City of Springfield to increase the supply of affordable housing. The city has committed to building or preserving 1,000 units of affordable housing by 2025. “This development is a major step toward meeting that goal,” said Ward 1 Councilor Adam Gomez. “We are committed to ensuring that all of our residents have access to safe, affordable housing.”
