Chicago Symphony Orchestra Announces New Music DirectorChicago Symphony Orchestra Announces New Music Director The Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) has named Esa-Pekka Salonen as its new Music Director, effective September 2023. Salonen, a renowned Finnish conductor and composer, will succeed Riccardo Muti, who held the position for 13 seasons. “Esa-Pekka Salonen is one of the most innovative and influential conductors of our time,” said CSO President and CEO Jeff Alexander. “His passion for music, his commitment to excellence, and his ability to connect with audiences make him the ideal choice to lead the CSO into its future.” Salonen, 64, is known for his adventurous programming, his advocacy for contemporary music, and his collaborations with leading soloists and ensembles. He has served as Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, and has conducted major orchestras worldwide. “I am honored and thrilled to join the Chicago Symphony Orchestra,” said Salonen. “The CSO has a long and distinguished history, and I am excited to work with the orchestra’s extraordinary musicians to create unforgettable musical experiences.” Salonen will assume his new role at the CSO on September 1, 2023, and will lead the orchestra in a wide range of concerts, including subscription series, special events, and collaborations with other arts organizations.
