Tucson’s Tortoise Sanctuary Undergoes Spring CleaningTucson’s Tortoise Sanctuary Undergoes Spring Cleaning Tucson, Arizona – Spring has sprung in the Sonoran Desert, and the Tohono Chul Botanical Gardens’ Tortoise Sanctuary is getting a much-needed cleaning. “Spring is a time of renewal and rebirth,” said Dr. Dave Stejskal, the Garden’s Curator of Conservation and Research. “It’s also a time to give our tortoises the best possible environment.” The sanctuary is home to 15 desert tortoises, all of whom have been rescued from various situations. Some were found as hatchlings, while others were adult tortoises that had been injured or lost. “We provide a safe and nurturing home for these animals,” said Stejskal. “We also work to educate the public about the importance of tortoise conservation.” The spring cleaning involves a thorough scrub-down of the sanctuary’s enclosures. The tortoises are temporarily moved to a holding area while the enclosures are cleaned with soap and water. “We also take this opportunity to inspect the tortoises for any signs of illness or injury,” said Stejskal. “We want to make sure they’re all healthy and happy.” Once the enclosures are clean, the tortoises are returned to their homes. They’re always excited to be back in their own space, and they love to explore the fresh, clean environment. “Spring cleaning is a lot of work,” said Stejskal. “But it’s worth it to see how much the tortoises enjoy their clean homes.” The Tortoise Sanctuary is open to the public seven days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Visitors can learn about desert tortoises, watch them feed, and even pet them. “We encourage people to come and visit the sanctuary,” said Stejskal. “It’s a great way to learn about these amazing creatures and support our conservation efforts.”
