The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has recently approved a plan to add approximately 24,000 acres to the existing Salt Flats National Wildlife Refuge. The expansion will nearly double the size of the refuge, which currently covers 126,000 acres. It includes vital habitat for numerous wildlife species, including Sandhill cranes, pronghorn antelope, and sage grouse. The flats also hold cultural and historical significance for Native American tribes and early explorers. The primary driver behind the expansion is to protect these valuable ecosystems and enhance the resilience of the refuge. The added acreage will provide additional buffer zones for wildlife, reduce the impacts of human activity, and improve water quality. “This expansion is critical to ensuring the long-term health and conservation of the Bonneville Salt Flats,” said BLM Utah State Director Ed Roberson. “It will safeguard this unique landscape for future generations.” The Salt Flats are renowned for their record-setting speed trials. For decades, legendary racers have pushed their vehicles to the limits on the salt’s smooth and expansive surface. The expansion will provide additional areas for this iconic motorsport event, while also preserving its historical significance. Landowners within the proposed expansion area have expressed support for the plan. They recognize the ecological and economic benefits the refuge provides, including increased tourism and economic opportunities. The expansion process is expected to take several years to complete. The BLM will work closely with stakeholders, including landowners, conservation groups, and recreation enthusiasts, to ensure a balanced and sustainable approach. Upon completion, the Bonneville Salt Flats National Wildlife Refuge will become the largest protected salt flat ecosystem in the United States. This significant expansion will safeguard this unique and awe-inspiring natural wonder for generations to come.
