According to the Wichita Police Department, the man was spotted driving the mower through the front doors of the Walmart store at 21st and Oliver shortly after 6 a.m. Witnesses said the man then drove around the store’s aisles, bumping into displays and shelves. “It was like something out of a movie,” said one shopper, who asked not to be identified. “I couldn’t believe I was seeing a guy on a lawn mower in Walmart.” Police officers quickly responded to the scene and ordered the man to stop. However, the man refused to comply and continued to drive the mower around the store. After a brief pursuit, officers apprehended the man and placed him under arrest. He was later identified as William Smith. Smith was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on charges of criminal damage to property, reckless driving, and trespassing. He is currently being held on a $1,500 bond. Investigators are still trying to determine why Smith decided to ride a lawn mower into Walmart. Witnesses said he did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. “This is definitely not something we see every day,” said Wichita Police Captain Brad Davis. “We’re still trying to figure out what motivated the suspect to do this.” Walmart officials said the store sustained minor damage as a result of the incident. The store has since reopened and is operating normally.
