Baton Rouge Bulletin: City Unveils Plan for Riverfront RevitalizationBaton Rouge Bulletin: City Unveils Plan for Riverfront Revitalization In a pivotal move towards enhancing the city’s waterfront allure, the Baton Rouge City Council has unveiled an ambitious plan for the revitalization of its historic riverfront. The comprehensive redevelopment strategy aims to transform the city’s connection to the Mississippi River and create vibrant new spaces for residents and visitors alike. The centerpiece of the plan is the proposed “Mississippi Riverfront Park,” a sprawling green space that will stretch along the levee from the USS Kidd Veterans Memorial to the I-10 Mississippi River Bridge. The park will feature walking and biking trails, picnic areas, a playground, and an open-air amphitheater for community events. Another key component is the development of “River’s Edge North” and “River’s Edge South,” two new residential and commercial districts that will flank the Mississippi Riverfront Park. These districts will offer a mix of housing options, including apartments, townhomes, and single-family homes, as well as shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. To enhance connectivity, the plan includes improvements to pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, including the extension of River Road Park to connect to the Mississippi Riverfront Park. Additionally, a new pedestrian bridge will be constructed across the Mississippi River to provide access to downtown Baton Rouge. “This plan is a testament to our city’s commitment to embracing the Mississippi River as an integral part of our identity,” said Mayor-President Kipp Holden. “By revitalizing our riverfront, we are creating a destination that will attract visitors, foster economic growth, and improve the quality of life for our residents.” The plan also includes provisions for flood protection and environmental sustainability. Levee improvements and floodwalls will be enhanced to safeguard the city from flooding, while green infrastructure and native landscaping will minimize environmental impact and promote biodiversity. The total cost of the revitalization project is estimated at $1.2 billion over the next decade. Funding sources include state and federal grants, private investment, and a dedicated riverfront sales tax. The Baton Rouge Riverfront Revitalization Plan is the culmination of years of planning and community input. With its approval by the City Council, the project now enters the implementation phase, with construction scheduled to begin in early 2024. “This is a transformative moment for Baton Rouge,” said City Councilwoman Chauna Banks. “Our riverfront has the potential to be a world-class destination that will rival other great waterfront cities. This plan sets the stage for a bright and vibrant future for our city.”
