This multi-phase project, spearheaded by the Savannah Historic District Development Authority, aims to preserve and enhance the district’s historical charm while revitalizing it for future generations. Phase one, currently underway, focuses on restoring the River Street Promenade, a beloved pedestrian walkway that runs along the Savannah River. The promenade will undergo extensive repairs, including the restoration of its historic pavers, benches, and lighting. “The River Street Promenade is an integral part of Savannah’s identity,” said John Johnson, chairman of the Savannah Historic District Development Authority. “This restoration will ensure that it continues to be a vibrant destination for both residents and visitors.” Phase two of the project will address the Savannah River Landing, a key waterfront development that features a hotel, retail space, and a public park. Plans include the restoration of the park’s iconic fountains, the installation of new seating areas, and the enhancement of the landscaping. “We want to create a welcoming and inviting space that encourages people to linger and enjoy the beauty of our riverfront,” said mayor Van Johnson. “This restoration will make the Savannah River Landing a centerpiece of our city.” The Riverfront District restoration project is expected to take several years to complete and will be funded through a combination of public and private sources. The first phase is scheduled for completion in 2023. “This project is a testament to Savannah’s commitment to preserving our history while embracing the future,” said Johnson. “We believe that by investing in our Riverfront District, we are investing in the future of our city.”
