Philadelphia Faces Surge in Pet Adoptions amid PandemicPhiladelphia Faces Surge in Pet Adoptions amid Pandemic Philadelphia has witnessed a remarkable surge in pet adoptions since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, as residents seek solace and companionship in the face of isolation. Animal care organizations across the city have reported an unprecedented demand for cats, dogs, and other pets. The Philadelphia Animal Care and Control (AC&C) has seen a 40% increase in adoptions compared to the same period last year. “People are spending more time at home and realizing they have the space and time for a pet,” said Lisa Richards, director of communications for AC&C. “They want to create a little bit of joy in their lives.” Apart from AC&C, private shelters and rescue groups have also experienced a surge in adoption inquiries. The Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has placed over 2,000 animals in new homes since March. “The pandemic has created a perfect storm for pet adoption,” said Melissa Levy, director of marketing and communications for PAWS. “People have more time, are working remotely, and are looking for a way to connect with something.” While the increase in adoptions is positive news for shelters, it also presents challenges. Many shelters are facing capacity issues, and there is a shortage of foster homes for animals awaiting adoption. To address this surge, AC&C has implemented a foster program called Project Reunite, which allows people to temporarily care for animals until they find permanent homes. PAWS has also increased its adoption fees to cover the cost of veterinary care and other expenses associated with preparing animals for adoption. Despite the challenges, animal care organizations are working tirelessly to meet the increased demand and to ensure that pets find loving and forever homes. “We’re grateful for the support of the community during this time,” said Richards. “Adopting a pet is not just about getting a companion, it’s about saving a life.”
