The blast sent shrapnel flying and caused extensive damage to several units. According to the Myrtle Beach Fire Department, the explosion occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. in Building 2 of the complex. Witnesses reported hearing a deafening noise and seeing smoke and flames billowing into the night sky. Firefighters rushed to the scene and quickly extinguished the blaze. However, the explosion had caused significant structural damage to at least five units, rendering them uninhabitable. “It was like a bomb had gone off,” said Michael Smith, a resident of the complex. “I was watching TV when suddenly the room filled with debris and smoke. I thought I was going to die.” Investigators have yet to determine the cause of the explosion, but they believe it may have been related to faulty gas lines. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is assisting with the investigation. “We are doing everything we can to determine what caused this explosion and hold those responsible accountable,” said SLED spokesman Thom Berry. Residents of the affected units have been displaced and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross. The complex’s management company is working to secure temporary housing for them. The explosion has left the Myrtle Beach community in shock and has raised concerns about the safety of the Sea Breeze Apartments. Many residents are demanding answers and are calling for a thorough investigation. “This is a tragedy that could have been avoided,” said Sarah Jones, a neighbor of the complex. “We deserve to know what happened and to be assured that this won’t happen again.” Mayor Brenda Bethune expressed her condolences to the victims and pledged the city’s full support. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the residents who have been affected by this explosion,” she said. “We will work tirelessly to provide them with the assistance they need and to ensure the safety of our community.”
